IAI refers to the technical methods of ancient Japanese martial arts used to cope with a sudden enemy arrack when one is not prepared for war. IAI is a technique used to address all situations that may be possible in an attack. That is the IAI.

The biggest characteristic of IAI is “Nukiuchi”, literally translated into “draw the sword and cut the enemy in one hand.” It is a simultaneous movement of drawing and attacking with the sword to confront the coming enemy. The second and the third cut of the sword that follow will terminate the enemy.

The final reaching point or the ultimate goal of IAI is to control and win against the enemy without the need of drawing the sword from its sheath.

居合とは、臨戦態勢にない状態から突然敵に襲いかかられた場合に対処する技法群のことです。どんな状況にも対応する、オールシチュエーションを想定して居合わせる技術、それが居合です。

居合の最大の特徴は、「抜き打ち」と呼ばれる刀を抜くと同時に片手で斬撃を加える技術にあり、これによって攻撃を加えてきた敵を迎撃し、続く二の太刀、三の太刀で仕留めるというながれになっています。

居合の最終到達点、目指すゴールは、刀を鞘から抜かずして敵を制す、戦わずして勝つことにあります。
